EFIB 2019 - European Forum for Industrial Biotechnology
A ride through innovation for a healthy planet
The programme covers the future of materials, food and feed, industrial processes in three major tracks on conference day 1 of the conference. On conference day 2 further topics include the usage of novel feedstocks such as CO2 or waste as a resource for bio-based processes. The dynamic political landscape from Brexit in UK to the growing innovation power of China will be discussed as well in an own track on global bioeconomies. A plenary session on Day 2 will also discuss the challenge of establishing a sustainable financing environment and of integrating industrial biotechnology and bioeconomy companies in financial categories which try to map sustainable businesses. The conference will offer an lively exhibition, a start-up village and a new “The Taste of the Future”-evening reception, providing tastings of novel food products, guided tours through the innovation areas and start-up pitches.
Materials & Packaging
The development of bio-based polymers continues to be in the focus of many stakeholders across industries. Chemical and waste managing companies in particular are looking for circular strategies using biological resources and biotechnological processes. During EFIB, representatives from BASF, Natureworks, Carbiolice, B4plastics or Suez, among others, provide insights into new products and technologies. Panel debates will discuss innovation challenges, regulatory aspects and efficiency criteria to reach a truly circular bioeconomy. In the start-up village a range of companies is also focusing on innovation in this field: For instance, with Senbis, Chrysalix, Cellulosic Technologies, Bgene, Nature’s principles and LignoPure. Food, Feed & Nutrition
A growing number of start-ups is working on novel feedstocks to provide new protein alternatives for human nutrition and animal feed. Be it insects, algae or plants as a resource for food or feed, be it synthetic biology or other cell-based strategies – at EFIB many examples of sustainable food innovation will be presented. Among others, companies such as Evonik, Meatable, Legendairy Foods, Rebel Meat, Phytolinc, Ynsect, Higher Steaks or 3FBio will showcase their approaches. In the food innovation showcase area in the exhibition many more product examples will be presented. During “The Taste of the Future” evening reception tastings will take place – with algae-based Gin, alternative burgers and snacks. In addition, the startlife incubator at University of Wageningen, Berlin-based ProVeg International incubator, the Chinese Food tech focused Bitsxbites venture capital fund (for more details see interview with Joseph Zhou, Managing Partner) and Rabobank will be among the speakers to discuss novel market trends and the current regulatory environment of food innovation in US and Europe.
Bio-based Processes
Synthetic biology, artificial intelligence and innovative bioanalytical methods are major drivers of innovation in the field of industrial biotechnology and bioeconomy. During EFIB experts from the field will discuss the efficient usage of both digital tools and synthetic biology approaches to help improve the scaling up bioprocesses. They will present disruptive technologies to provide clean meat developed in the petridish, fast DNA synthesis and new analytical processes for real-time process monitoring.
The challenge of scaling-up, standardization and regulation as well as new initiatives around the biofoundries concept will be discussed during EFIB as well. Experts from the OECD, Novozymes, Genomatica, LanzaTech, Evonetix, Syngulon, iMean, Evologic, Green Biologics and Fujifilm Diosynth, Higher Steaks have confirmed to speak.
Textiles & Fashion
In the view of the growing fast fashion trends on the one hand, and the huge environmental impact of the current textiles manufacturing processes on the other hand, is rising the need for more sustainable materials in the fashion industry along the value chain. With the supermodel Arizona Muse as a keynote speaker, large textile companies such as Aquafil and Inditex in the programme and several innovation startups EFIB for the first time sheds light on this highly dynamic sector. Sustainable product examples ranging from shoes to robes, jackets and T-Shirts will be showcased in the fashion innovation area and the start-up village in the exhibition. The Vienna Textile Lab, NEEM or ScobyTec are showing that biotechnology and bioprocesses has reached this sector to provide completly new strategies to solve environmental problems of the fashion industry. Further fashion start-ups are represented in the exhibition.
